Why Your Garbage Disposal Hums but Won't Spin - Quick Answer
A humming garbage disposal means the motor is getting power but the flywheel is stuck. Something is jamming the impeller blades - a bone fragment, fruit pit, glass shard, or utensil. The fix usually takes 5 minutes with a hex wrench. If the motor overheated, the internal breaker tripped - press the red reset button on the bottom. If it still won't work, you may need professional garbage disposal repair.
| Problem | Cause | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|

| Leaking from bottom | Worn seal or cracked housing | Replacement needed | $150-$300 |

Step 1: Turn Off Power
Before working on any garbage disposal, turn it off at the switch AND at the circuit breaker. Never put your hand inside a disposal. Safety first - this applies to GE and all other brands including InSinkErator, Moen, and KitchenAid disposals.
Step 2: Try the Reset Button
Look at the bottom of the disposal unit under the sink. There's a small red (or black) button. If the motor overheated from running too long or being jammed, this internal circuit breaker trips. Press it firmly until it clicks. Wait 5 minutes, then try the disposal again.
Step 3: Use the Hex Wrench
Most disposals come with a hex wrench (Allen key) that fits a socket in the bottom center of the unit. Insert the wrench and rotate back and forth to manually free the flywheel. You should feel resistance, then the flywheel breaks free. No hex wrench? A 1/4-inch Allen key works on most InSinkErator models.
Step 4: Remove the Obstruction
With the power OFF, use long-nose pliers or tongs to reach in and remove whatever jammed the disposal. Common culprits: bones, fruit pits, glass, bottle caps, twist ties, rubber bands, and small utensils.
Step 5: Test
Restore power, run cold water, and flip the switch. The disposal should spin freely. If it still hums or doesn't work, the motor may be burned out and you'll need a replacement.
When to Replace vs Repair
Garbage disposals typically last 8-15 years. If yours is over 10 years old and the motor is burned out, replacement is usually more cost-effective than repair. A new 1/2 HP disposal installed costs $150-$300 including labor. Our Woodbridge VA technicians handle both repair and new installations same-day.
