Kitchen Appliance Safety Essentials - Quick Reference
Kitchen appliances cause over 150,000 house fires per year in the United States. Cooking is the #1 cause of home fires, and faulty appliances contribute to thousands of gas leaks and electrical incidents. Knowing the warning signs and what to do in an emergency can save your home and your family. If you smell gas or see sparking, call our 24/7 emergency repair line immediately.
| Hazard | Warning Signs | Immediate Action |
|---|---|---|
| Gas leak | Rotten egg smell, hissing near stove/oven | Leave house, call 911, then gas company |
| Electrical fire risk | Burning smell, flickering lights, warm outlets | Unplug appliance, turn off breaker |
| Dryer vent fire | Clothes very hot, burning smell, long dry times | Stop dryer, clean vent immediately |
| Refrigerant leak | Chemical/sweet smell, oily residue near coils | Ventilate room, call repair tech |
| Water leak damage | Pooling under dishwasher/washer, mold smell | Shut water supply valve, dry area |
Gas Appliance Safety
Gas stoves, ovens, and dryers should be inspected annually. The gas connector (flex line) behind your stove can crack over time, especially if the stove has been moved. Warning signs of a gas leak: rotten egg smell, hissing sound near connections, dead plants near the appliance, or a higher-than-normal gas bill.
If you smell gas: Do NOT flip any light switches, use your phone, or create any spark. Open windows, leave the house, and call 911 from outside. After the utility company confirms it's safe, call us for emergency gas appliance repair.
Electrical Safety
Major appliances like refrigerators, washers, and dishwashers should be on dedicated circuits. Warning signs of electrical problems: tripped breakers, warm or discolored outlets, burning smell from an appliance, or flickering lights when an appliance starts. Never use extension cords with major appliances.
Older homes in Springfield and Alexandria may have outdated 2-prong outlets or insufficient amperage for modern appliances. If your breaker trips repeatedly, have an electrician upgrade the circuit before the wiring overheats.
Dryer Fire Prevention
Dryers cause approximately 2,900 house fires per year, almost all from lint buildup in the vent line. Clean your lint trap after every load, but more importantly, have the entire dryer vent line professionally cleaned at least once a year. Read our complete dryer vent fire prevention guide for detailed steps.
Water Damage Prevention
Dishwashers and washing machines can leak slowly for weeks before you notice. Inspect under and behind these appliances monthly. Replace rubber washing machine hoses with braided stainless steel hoses (they last longer and burst-proof). For dishwashers, check the door gasket for cracks and the drain hose for kinks.
