Samsung Refrigerator Not Cooling? The Ice Buildup Problem Explained

If your Samsung French-door refrigerator has stopped cooling but the freezer still works, you are likely dealing with the most common Samsung refrigerator issue we see: ice buildup on the evaporator coils behind the freezer back panel. This is a known design issue affecting millions of Samsung refrigerators manufactured between 2014 and 2021.

What Happens Inside Your Samsung Fridge

Samsung French-door refrigerators use a single evaporator in the freezer section. A fan blows cold air from the freezer through a duct into the fresh food compartment. When ice builds up on the evaporator coils, it blocks airflow to the refrigerator section. The freezer stays cold because it is right next to the coils, but the fridge warms up to room temperature.

The root cause is typically a failed defrost system component: the defrost heater, defrost thermostat (bi-metal), or defrost temperature sensor. Samsung's auto-defrost cycle is supposed to melt any frost every 6–12 hours, but when one of these parts fails, ice accumulates until it completely blocks the air duct.

Samsung Models Most Commonly Affected

  • RF263 series (RF263BEAESR, RF263TEAESR)
  • RF28 series (RF28HMEDBSR, RF28HFEDBSR, RF28JBEDBSG)
  • RF25 series (RF25HMEDBSR)
  • RF23 series (RF23HCEDBSR)
  • RF22 series (RF22KREDBSR)
  • RT21 series (RT21M6213SR)

How to Confirm the Diagnosis

Before calling for service, you can check for this issue yourself:

  1. Check freezer back panel: Open the freezer and look for frost or ice visible around the edges of the back panel. If you see thick frost creeping around the panel, ice is building up on the coils behind it.
  2. Listen for the fan: With the freezer door open, press the door switch (small button near the hinge). If the fan does not turn on, either the fan motor has failed or ice is blocking the fan blade.
  3. Check fridge temperature: If the fridge section reads above 45°F but the freezer is at or below 0°F, the airflow duct is blocked.

The Fix

The repair involves:

  1. Removing the freezer back panel
  2. Manually defrosting the evaporator coils (using a steamer or hair dryer — never a heat gun or open flame)
  3. Testing and replacing the failed defrost component (heater, thermostat, or sensor)
  4. Reassembling and verifying proper defrost cycle operation

Some technicians also install a Samsung-supplied defrost kit that includes an updated drain clip and improved evaporator cover to reduce future ice buildup. We recommend this upgrade whenever available for your model.

Repair Cost

RepairParts + Labor
Defrost heater replacement$160–$240
Defrost thermostat (bi-metal)$120–$190
Defrost sensor/fuse$100–$170
Samsung defrost kit (all components)$200–$300
Evaporator fan motor$130–$200

Temporary Workaround

If you cannot get a repair appointment immediately, you can perform a manual defrost to restore cooling temporarily:

  1. Remove all food from the freezer
  2. Unplug the refrigerator
  3. Leave the freezer and fridge doors open
  4. Place towels around the base to catch water
  5. Wait 24–48 hours for all ice to melt completely
  6. Plug it back in

This will restore cooling for 2–6 weeks until ice builds up again. It is a temporary fix only — the failed defrost component still needs replacing.

Samsung Warranty Note

Samsung extended the sealed system warranty on many French-door models to 5 years (some components up to 10 years for the compressor). Check your model number on Samsung's warranty lookup page or call us — we check warranty status on every Samsung service call and can process warranty claims directly.
